After Multiculturalism: American Literary History in the Age of Obama
This workshop will focus on comparative international as well as ethnic and multilingual approaches to works of literature in their historical and cultural (especially interartistic) contexts. (Many of the texts in these categories are the ones that have made narrative literary history more difficult.)
Work by participants (app. 15 to 25 pages) should be submitted in digitized form one month prior to the beginning of the Summer Institute. It will be circulated among the other seminar participants and discussed in-depth in our meetings.
Recommended Readings.:
- Works written by American authors but set outside the United States (e.g. Washington Irving, Gertrude Stein, and Ernest Hemingway)
- Minority, migrant, and mixed-race writing (including African American and Irish-American authors)
- American literature written in languages other than English or with a strong multilingual component (e.g. in the Multilingual Anthology of American Literature)
- Texts that are particularly open to other arts, especially music and painting.
- Primary readings will be accompanied by excerpts from various literary histories, past, present, and forthcoming.
