Taking the 2008 US elections as our point of departure, this workshop will use competing theories of democracy to explore the political function, affective power, and global role of the office of the U.S. president. We will be especially interested in negotiating election year debates about the responsibility of government, the political meaning of Barack Obama's success, and the potential of voter mobilization to contribute to new left social movements.
