US identity is a highly contested subject. This conference seeks to explore the relationship between war and identity through a range of disciplines to examine the disparate constructions of the United States during and after pivotal wars from the 19th to 21st centuries. Participants will examine the dominant sites of identity formation and contestation within the United States, analyse its projection and crucially consider identity formation at the so-called periphery. It will for example deal with the construction of the traditional meta-narrative of US diplomacy and war aims, with the discourses both domestic and foreign on US identity, with the literature and archives associated with 'victory culture' and more recently, with the 'culture of defeat' by way of example. All ideas are welcome for consideration.
Participants are encouraged to focus on a particular aspect within the parameters of the conference and where possible to decentre traditional approaches to the subject. Where possible papers should engage a range of methodologies that transcend traditional disciplines and participants from American Studies departments will be encouraged to operate in the post-nationalist context.

Registration Information
- €50 Registration Fee
- €15 Student/Unwaged Registration Fee
Registration fee includes a conference pack and admission to all conference seminars, plenary sessions, teas/coffees, lunch on Saturday and reception.
A conference meal will take place on the evening of Saturday 21 March. For those interested in participating, an additional payment of €34 is to be made in advance or at the start of the conference.
